The story takes place on the island/kingdom of Ark. The rightful king—King Ather—has been overthrown by a powerful warlord and his enchantress wife.
The three princes of Ark: Prince Eric (Crown Prince) Brandel (Second Prince) Mark (Youngest Prince, studious, with an interest in magic). Princess Fontaine — engaged to Prince Eric, she flees with the princes. Ferragamo — the court wizard who escapes with the princes. Amarino — the violet‐eyed enchantress, wife of the usurper, whose magical power is growing. Longfur — the telepathic cat-familiar of Mark.
A coup d’état occurs on Ark: the warlord and Amarino seize power, overthrow King Ather. The three princes flee with Ferragamo, along with Princess Fontaine and others, to a hidden forest refuge beyond the capital. While in hiding, the princes learn of a prophecy (via an ancient tome) that states only one of them will be able to reclaim the throne and restore the kingdom. Mark, the youngest, though not the obvious warrior‐type, shows interest in magic and has the telepathic cat Longfur assisting him. The wizard Ferragamo mentors them. The usurper rule deepens: Amarino’s powers rise, and the kingdom of Ark suffers under enchantment and tyranny. The exiles plot their resistance. The narrative builds toward the brothers’ confrontation with their usurpers, the fulfillment of prophecy, and the struggle between the rightful order and the magical tyranny exerted by Amarino + the warlord. The story ends with a sense of the challenge ahead (the trilogy continues in Book 2 and Book 3). The youngest Prince Mark is positioned for a key role, though problems remain to be solved.
