Here’s Rachel Walsh. Twenty-seven and the miserable owner of size 8 feet. She has regular congress with Luke Costello, a man who wears his leather trousers tight. And she’s fond – some might say too fond – of recreational drugs. Until everything goes pear-shaped and she finds herself being frog-marched to the Cloisters – Dublin’s answer to the Betty Ford Clinic. She’s outraged. Surely she’s not thin enough to be an addict? But on the bright side, she’s heard that rehab places are wall-to-wall jacuzzis, gymnasiums and rock stars going tepid turkey. Rachel isn’t expecting plump, middle-aged men in brown jumpers, and more group therapy than you can shake a stick at. Worse still she seems to be expected to join in. Heartsick and Luke-sick, she seeks redemption in the shape of Chris, a Man with a Past. A man who might be more trouble than he’s worth. Rachel is airlifted from addiction to the unfamiliar terrain of adulthood, via a love story or two, in a novel by turns poignant, powerful and seriously funny. Significant wear on the cover sun aged pages. DIFFERENT COVER.

Maybe it was a grandparent, or a teacher or a colleague. Someone older, patient and wise, who understood you when you were young and searching, and gave you sound advice to help you make your way through it. For Mitch Albom, that person was Morrie Schwartz, his college professor from nearly twenty years ago. Maybe, like Mitch, you lost track of this mentor as you made your way, and the insights faded. Wouldn’t you like to see that person again, ask the bigger questions that still haunt you? Mitch Albom had that second chance. He rediscovered Morrie in the last months of the older man’s life. Knowing he was dying of ALS – or motor neurone disease -, Morrie visited Mitch in his study every Tuesday, just as they used to back in college. Their rekindled relationship turned into one final class: lessons in how to live. This is a chronicle of their time together, through which Mitch shares Morrie’s lasting gift with the world. An amazing account of linguistic missionaries and their experience while living in Fukutao with the Folopa people.Their beliefs in evil spirits, appeasing spirits would be chucked off as superstition in the civilized world, but was very real to them. The Shaman controlled a lot of what they did and caused a great deal of unrest. Their demand of retribution for accidents, whether intentional or by accident can be childish. This isn’t normally a subject I find interesting, but this book was interesting. The culture of the Folopa is interesting. The changes that took place during the time the missionaries lived there and the elders were asked if they’d want to go back to their old lifestyle. It was an emphatic no. Tidy Condition

Why, then, does she wonder if this is all there is? Ginger is just the opposite. She flunked out of university, is a failed actress who has never had a relationship lasting more than a month, and only has somewhere to live because she was her eccentric grandmother’s favourite. Lia alone is perfectly content with her life. Three women, with nothing in common, nothing at all – except that they are all about to have their first child. Meeting each other will change all their lives as doubt becomes certainty, old sins are forgiven, and as what begins as friendship ends in betrayal. These Foolish Things is the second novel of contemporary relationships by the highly praised author of More Innocent Times (‘A wonderfully woven tale of tangled relationships. The great explorers were the celebrities of their day – the romance and danger of their daring expeditions captured the public imagination and the world’s headlines to an extraordinary degree. Not all of them lived to tell the tale, of course, but those who emerged triumphant from jungle, desert or polar wasteland were hailed as if returning from beyond the grave. Journalists vied for their stories and publishers rushed their first-hand accounts of exciting and dangerous journeys into print for a wide and voracious readership. Acclaimed travel historian John Keay introduces this selection of the best of these first-hand narratives, including those of John Ross and John Franklin, writing about their experiences in the Arctic; Richard Burton’s account of his search for the source of the Nile; John Speke on Lake Victoria; David Livingstone and Henry Stanley’s adventures in central Africa; Alexander McKenzie’s first crossing of America and Meriwether Lewis’s encounter with the Shoshonee; Robert Peary and Roald Amundsen’s voyages to the poles; and the poignant last words of William Wills in Australia and Robert Scott’s In Extremis.

Keay includes the experiences of four remarkable twentieth-century explorers: Hiram Bingham on the discovery of Machu Picchu; Wilfred Thesiger on Arabia’s Empty Quarter; Edmund Hillary on reaching the summit of Everest; and Harry St John Bridger Philby facing despair and defeat in the Arabian desert.
