Moo
$6.00

Brilliantly funny satire set in a contemporary American university.

Deep in the wheatfields of the American midwest, Moo University is in a state of disarray…

In this witty and biting comedy of manners, Jane Smiley turns her wryly perceptive eye towards a community where men and women, the innocent and the cynical, thinkers and careerists, live and work together – in complete disharmony.

‘Satire on a grand scale, a microscopic examination of contemporary American mores conducted with great wit and gracious indulgence for human frailty …Trying to describe this book’s marvellous variety is like trying to describe London to someone who has never been there. The only appropriate exhortation is “Read it.”‘

In 1970, Harold Stamp, a retarded twenty-year-old was convicted on disputed evidence and a retracted confession of brutally murdering his grandmother the one person who understood and protected him. Thirty years on, Jonathan Hughes, an anthropologist specialising in social stereotyping, comes across the case by accident. He finds alarming disparities in the evidence and has little doubt that Stamp’s conviction was a terrible miscarriage of justice. But how far is he prepared to go in the search for justice? Is the forgotten story of one friendless young man compelling enough to make him leave his books and face his own demons? And with what result? If Stamp didn’t murder Grace Jeffries then somebody else did, which means there’s a dangerous killer still at large.

But there’s one thing Bella is not prepared to hear again: the “L” word. Her body might be making hormonal demands, but she’s resolute in not wanting the emotional baggage of love again. Nobody will be surprised, of course, to learn that she’s back up to her neck in romantic trouble again–and why is it she always ends up with the wrong kind of man? Good: Tidy condition.

The Cat from Kitaly began life in the marble mountains of Carrara some 100 years ago. Renown Sculptor Antinio Bortone, a professor at the Florentine School of Art, bought together a young woman knitting socks for first World War soldiers and this little cat, whose delight was to play with the ball of wool before drifting off to sleep. Knitting for the front as the sculpture is now called, was part of 500 pieces of art bought to New Zealand in 1918 and sold to raise funds for soldiers blinded by mustard gas during the war. Visiting Paris, surviving a storm at sea, making friends with a rat, being shaken by earthquakes, and bought, not once but twice, by the people of Christchurch, New Zealand – these adventures are only part of his story. Little wonder he was offended when he heard himself described as “just a Cat”. It was then he decided he needed to tell his life’s story for he is and always well be THE CAT FROM KITALY. By the summer of 1952, Beatrice Nightingale had taught school in New York City for 24 years, had been divorced from her Hollywood-composer husband for some 20 of those years, and had been estranged from her brother for nearly her entire life. She had lived in the same small apartment since her wedding, a space still dominated by her ex-husband’s piano–just as her life was still defined by his decisions of so long ago. But that summer, her brother suddenly reached out to her for the first time in years, begging her to intercept and retrieve her nephew, a Paris runaway. His request propels Bea toward decisions and departures–partly well intended, partly selfish–that unravel a complex knot of siblings, spouses, exes, and Bea’s extended family, in an unforgettable portrait of a middle-aged woman who finally gains the chance to escape the traps of her past. Bea travels to Paris, California, and back to New York, and the novel shifts perspective to reveal the stories of her niece, her nephew and his unexpected wife, Bea’s brother and sister-in-law, and her ex-husband. The men in her life have treated her badly, as she is painfully aware, yet in finally trying to gain her own independence from them, how can she resist her own, more subtle form of counterattack and revenge? A riveting novel of friendship, adventure and love against the odds, set in the early days of flight in Prohibition-era America.

Abe Rockwell and Willard T. Thornton are famous fighter pilots together in World War I. Willard returns to a hero’s welcome in America and launches a film career. Abe just wants to fly – and he has no rich family to support him.

When he crash lands in small-town Georgia, the locals recognise Abe and appeal to him for help. Alcohol-smuggling gangsters are trying to oust them from their own homes. But Abe can’t see that his one patched-up aircraft can make much difference.

Slowly, a plan forms and Abe needs help himself. Enter another tremendously skilled pilot – but it’s a woman. Abe doesn’t want to take her on, but she’s the best there is and brave with it. Neither of them can predict exactly what they’ve let themselves in for.

Willard, meanwhile, forsakes films for banking and rises fast – only to uncover some very dodgy business at the core of the company. He’d like to turn a blind eye but eventually he’s in so deep that he can’t. The firm is under serious threat, from a devious and resourceful attacker. Which is when Willard realises who it must be, and how he’s going to have to team up with someone he’d always overlooked.

This magnificent new book is Alison Weir’s greatest achievement: a detailed biography of Henry VIII, set against the cultural, social and political background of his court – the most magnificent court ever seen in England – and the splendour of his many sumptuous palaces. Seen from this new perspective, Henry VIII emerges as a fully-rounded and realistic personality, not the two-dimensional caricature of popular misconception. This book is not just an entertaining narrative packed with colourful description and a wealth of anecdotal evidence, but a comprehensive analytical study of the development of both monarch and court during a crucial period in English history. As well as challenging some recent theories, it offers controversial new conclusions based on contemporary evidence that has until now been overlooked. This is a triumph of historical writing which will appeal equally to the general reader and the serious historian.

Once it had been the great forest of Lythe–a vast and impenetrable thicket of green–and here had lived the Fairfaxes, grandly, at Fairfax Manor. But over the centuries the forest had been destroyed, and the Fairfaxes had dwindled too; now they lived in ‘Arden’ at the end of Hawthorne Close and were hardly a family at all.
There was Vinny, the Aunt from Hell, and Gordon, who had forgotten them for seven years. And there was Charles, who passed his life awaiting visits from aliens and for his mother to come back. But it is Isobel to whom the story belongs, also waiting for the return of her mother–the thin, dangerous Eliza, whose disappearance is part of the mystery that still remains at the heart of the forest. No one does glamour, severity, girlish charm or tight-lipped witticism better than Dame Maggie Smith, one of Britain’s best-loved actors. This new biography shines the stage-lights on the life and work of a truly remarkable performer, one whose career spans six decades.

From her days as a star of West End comedy and revue, Dame Maggie’s path would cross with those of the greatest actors, playwrights and directors of the era. Whether stealing scenes from Richard Burton (by his own admission), answering back to Laurence Olivier, or impressing Ingmar Bergman, her career can be seen as a Who’s Who of British theatre in the twentieth century. This book also covers her success in Hollywood, inaugurated by her first Oscar for her signature film, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, as well as her subsequent departure to Canada for a prolific four-season run of leading theatre roles.

Recently Dame Maggie has been as prominent on our screens as ever, with high-profile roles as Violet Crawley, the formidable Dowager Countess of Grantham, in the phenomenally successful television series Downton Abbey, and as Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter film franchise: what she herself describes as ‘Miss Jean Brodie in a wizard’s hat’. Yet paradoxically she remains an enigmatic figure, rarely appearing in public and carefully guarding her considerable talent. Michael Coveney’s absorbing biography, drawing on personal archives, interviews and encounters with the actress, as well as conversations with immediate family and dear friends, is therefore as close as it gets to seeing the real Maggie Smith.

Book by Adrian Gilbert: Drawing on decades of historical research, the authors argue that the legendary King Arthur was not a single historical figure but actually two different rulers whose stories became merged over time. The book explores post-Roman Britain, royal bloodlines linked to the Roman Caesars, and Arthurian legends connected to the Holy Grail and early British Christianity. The authors also claim to identify the burial places of both historical Arthurs, presenting an alternative interpretation of British history and mythology. Includes colour photos.
