The original concept of a National Park, where an area of land is set aside for conserving in its natural state, is now almost 100 years old with the world's first being formed at Yellowstone in the USA in 1887. Tongariro National Park in New Zealand was a very close second, with the government of the day being quick to recognise the value and importance of preserving large areas of the natural landscape in an unspoiled state, and firmly controlling the usage of its resources for the well-being of its people. Since that time, a total of 10 National Parks have been created in New Zealand, all of which are carefully manned by the Department of Lands and Survey.
