About this book

Description

The original concept of a National Park, where an area of land is set aside for conserving in its natural state, is now almost 100 years old with the world's first being formed at Yellowstone in the USA in 1887. Tongariro National Park in New Zealand was a very close second, with the government of the day being quick to recognise the value and importance of preserving large areas of the natural landscape in an unspoiled state, and firmly controlling the usage of its resources for the well-being of its people. Since that time, a total of 10 National Parks have been created in New Zealand, all of which are carefully manned by the Department of Lands and Survey. Each Park is unique in its geography, climate, wildlife, leisure opportunities and scenic attractions, and the travelling public are becoming more aware of the wonderful facilities for general holidaying and enjoyment they have to offer. This book gives an excellent coverage of all existing National Parks in New Zealand, for the particular purpose of informing the motorist travelling into these areas everything needed to know. Interesting commentaries on the history of each Park are followed by instructions as to roading, accommodation, and leisure attractions, with specific information such as seasonal changes which require special attention to clothing etc. There are many excellent photographs of areas from each Park, together with detailed maps showing boundaries, access roads and walks. Besides adding to the reader's general level of awareness of New Zealand's National Parks, this book will prove especially useful for intending Park visitors, as a guide to the many varied attractions available for their enjoyment.
