Set on the fictional plantation of Falconhurst in Alabama, the novel exposes the brutal realities of slavery, especially the system of slave‑breeding and exploitation of enslaved Black people as property. The story follows a slave named Drummage (also referred to as Drummage, the “virile and handsome slave” in advertising copy) who rises from the plantation’s chattel to a position of power within the estate. Meanwhile, the white mistress (or woman owner) of Falconhurst—described as “selfish” and “sensual” —plays a pivotal role in the story: Drummage ultimately becomes “master” of not only the plantation but of her, reversing power dynamics in a startling way. The novel is set during the turbulence of the American Civil War, and shows how the old plantation regime is shaken by war, slave rebellion, changing social orders, and the collapse of the “Old South”. In short, it is a lurid, sensational depiction of the plantation system, with themes of violence, sexual exploitation, power, race, and upheaval — written as a historical‑fiction spectacle rather than a strictly accurate historical novel. New Zealand orders of $40 or more receive free shipping. For smaller orders, Christchurch delivery to postcodes beginning with 8 is $5, metro New Zealand delivery is $9, and rural New Zealand delivery is $14.

Do you ship outside New Zealand?

We currently ship to Australia for a flat rate of $37. We do not currently ship to other countries.
