This album presents a personal view of New Zealand's incredible landscape. Ie folows my previous work, New Zealand / Dramatic Landscape, first published in 1979. The criterion. for both volumes was to select what is typically New Zealand rather than to rely on photographic cliché. The plate would have to evoke an intense sense of recognition as well as a sense of wonder at the beauty or grandeur that it depicted. There would be no room for "artiness". The problem, of course, was to find common ground. This was not possible. Early in my photographic career I learned that people see things in different ways. If I were to select 80 transparencies and project these for a group of friends, there would be little common ground in the selection of 10 which would be deemed as the best by whatever criterion was applied.
This therefore is my selection of what I feel are some aspects of New Zealand's incredible landscape, but I am sure that there will be others with their view who will follow for many generations to come, just as there are artists and writers who restate the vision of each generation, while others document it. The best of these works, while satisfying a need at the time of their publication, also create a need for something new to follow. Those works which state an eternal truth become classics and are as good today as they were in Homer's day.
Photographic works have not yet won such recognition and perhaps never will. Photography and the art of colour printing will, however, continue making quantum leaps in technical development and this in itself will provide good reason for new pictorial essays on the landscape and its people. Then, perhaps at some stage in the future, the best of these works will be regarded as classics in their own right. This enormous volume truly gives justice to the beautiful scenery of this island nation. Illustrated with hundred of full-color photos of the landscapes, wildlife, and flora of New Zealand.
