About this book

Description

The year is 1783. Roger Brook is a spirited and intelligent young man, fresh out of school and eager for adventure and to make his fortune. Having quarreled with his father and wishing to escape the prospect of a career in the Navy, he makes the impulsive decision to run away from England and seek his destiny in France. Initially, Roger finds himself with little knowledge of French and limited resources, but his charm, quick wit, and adaptability soon see him navigate the complex social landscape of pre-Revolutionary France. He quickly falls under the spell of two captivating women: the alluring and somewhat dangerous Georgina Thursby, and the beautiful and aristocratic Athénais de Rochambeau. His admiration for these women, particularly Athénais, propels him into the inner circles of French society and, inadvertently, into the murky world of foreign policy and political intrigue.
