Romance of the Three Kingdoms (《三国演义》) by Luo Guanzhong, written in the 14th century, is one of China’s Four Great Classical Novels. It’s a sweeping historical epic that dramatizes the turbulent years near the end of the Han Dynasty (around 184–280 CE) and the Three Kingdoms period, when China was divided into the rival states of Wei, Shu, and Wu. Synopsis The novel begins with the decline of the Han Dynasty, weakened by corruption and rebellion. The chaos gives rise to warlords competing for power across China. Among them emerge three central figures: Cao Cao, a brilliant but ruthless strategist who seeks to unify the empire under his rule; Liu Bei, a benevolent and idealistic nobleman devoted to restoring the Han dynasty; and Sun Quan, the pragmatic ruler of the southern lands. Liu Bei is aided by two sworn brothers, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei, and by the genius strategist Zhuge Liang (Kongming), whose brilliance in diplomacy and warfare becomes legendary. As alliances shift and betrayals abound, the three kingdoms of Wei, Shu, and Wu emerge in uneasy balance after the famous Battle of Red Cliffs, where Zhuge Liang and Sun Quan’s forces defeat Cao Cao’s massive army through cunning strategy. The latter half of the novel focuses on the struggles between these kingdoms — Zhuge Liang’s tireless campaigns to restore Han legitimacy, Cao Cao’s successors’ pursuit of dominance, and the eventual exhaustion of all three powers. Ultimately, the state of Wei prevails, only to be overthrown by the Jin dynasty, which reunifies China — bringing the epic cycle of ambition, loyalty, and fate to a close.
