About this book
Description
The book covers the dramatic rise and catastrophic collapse of the Australian telecommunications company One.Tel. Founded in 1995 by young entrepreneurs Jodee Rich and Brad Keeling, the company was tailored to look young, hip, and exceptionally smart. It managed to secure massive financial backing from corporate royalty—specifically Lachlan Murdoch and James Packer, the heirs to the prominent Murdoch and Packer media empires.
Driven by intense hype, One.Tel expanded faster than almost any company in Australian history, reaching a peak valuation of over $5 billion in late 1999. However, the growth was unsustainable, built on aggressive marketing, chaotic billing systems, and massive cash burn. By May 2001, the empire completely vanished, collapsing into insolvency and liquidating with spectacular speed.
Paul Barry provides a detailed, riveting inside look at the corporate greed, unchecked hubris, and lack of oversight that led two of Australia's richest families to lose an astonishing $950 million in what became one of the country's most notorious corporate disasters.
