About this book

Description

Rachel Watson, a divorced, unemployed alcoholic who still takes the commuter train to and from London every day to maintain the illusion of a normal life. On her journey, she becomes obsessed with a seemingly perfect couple she observes from her window, whom she nicknames "Jess and Jason." Their life appears to be everything she lost with her ex-husband, Tom. However, one day, she sees "Jess" (whose real name is Megan Hipwell) kissing another man. Shortly after, Megan goes missing. Rachel, having had a drunken blackout on the night of the disappearance, wakes up with injuries and no memory of what happened. Convinced that what she saw on the train is a crucial clue, she involves herself in the police investigation. The narrative is told from the alternating perspectives of three women: Rachel, Megan, and Anna (Tom's new wife). As the story unfolds, each woman's secrets and lies are revealed, and the true events of that night slowly come to light, forcing Rachel to confront her own past and the terrifying truth about her marriage.
